Explainer, promo or demo: choosing the right video for your SaaS

Three formats that are often confused — and cost very different amounts of attention. A quick guide to picking the one your product needs right now.

"We need a video" can mean three very different things. Picking the wrong format is the most common reason a good-looking video underperforms. Here is how we help teams choose.

The explainer: make the idea click

Job: help someone who has never heard of you understand what you do and why it matters.

An explainer leads with the problem, introduces your product as the shift, and shows just enough of it to make the outcome believable. It is usually 60–120 seconds and lives on your homepage, landing pages and in early sales conversations.

Choose it when your category is new, your product is technical, or visitors bounce because they don't "get it" fast enough.

The promo: make people feel something

Job: create energy and attention — for a launch, a funding announcement, a new feature or a campaign.

A promo is shorter and faster. It trades detail for rhythm: strong visuals, bold typography, music-led pacing and a single memorable message. It works on social, Product Hunt, event screens and as a homepage hero loop.

Choose it when people already understand the problem and you need them to notice you — or to notice that something new has arrived.

The demo: show how it really works

Job: walk an interested viewer through real workflows so they can picture using the product.

A demo is the most concrete format. It follows the interface closely, explains each step and often runs longer — length here is fine, because the viewer has chosen to learn. Demos power trial onboarding, sales follow-ups and help centres.

Choose it when buyers are evaluating you against alternatives, or when sales repeat the same walkthrough on every call.

A quick decision table

  • Visitors don't understand what you do → explainer.
  • People understand, but nobody's talking about you → promo.
  • People are interested, but stall before buying → demo.
  • You are launching and need all three → plan one master story, then build a promo, an explainer and short demo clips from shared assets.

The question isn't "which video looks best?" It's "where does our funnel leak — and which video plugs that leak?"

Sharing assets between formats

The formats are different, but the building blocks don't have to be. A well-planned project designs the style frames, UI animations and 3D models once, then reuses them across cuts. That keeps the brand consistent and makes the second and third videos much faster to produce.

Still not sure?

Tell us where your funnel leaks and where the video will live. On a short call we will suggest the format, the length and the cuts that make sense — before any budget is committed. Book a call.
